Baltimore Sun television and media columnist David Zurawik won the 2017 National Press Club's Arthur Rowse Award for Press Criticism, the club announced Monday.
The national award honors "excellence in examining the role and work of the news media," according to the Press Club's website. Zurawik was recognized for his perceptive columns "on media, the campaign and changes in the electorate."
The announcement marks Zurawik's second time winning the Rowse award, which includes print and broadcast categories; he took home his first Rowse award in 2015.
NPR's David Folkenflik received this year's Rowse award in the broadcast category. Other National Press Club awardees include The Washington Post's David Fahrenthold for political analysis and The Texas Tribune's Abby Livingston for Washington regional reporting.
Zurawik has covered media and television, the "greatest beat in the world" he said, for The Sun since 1989. This year, he tackled the media's role in covering President Donald Trump's administration, a "huge challenge," but an important one, he said.
"It's nice to get [the award] now," Zurawik said. "It's really a revolutionary time in media."
Zurawik is the author of "The Jews of Prime Time," a book examining on-screen Jewish personalities, and a professor at Goucher College in Towson. He has a master's degree in pop culture reporting from the University of Wisconsin and a doctorate degree in American studies from the University of Maryland.
